(1) Preface - Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, rich in extraordinary talent, was a great socialist of the twentieth century. His life was dedicated to the oppressed, oppressed and oppressed masses. Throughout his life he tried to improve his condition. His heart was saddened by the poverty of India. He never confined himself to the poverty of India only, the poverty of the entire human race became the cause of his thoughts and sorrows. In his dream there was a world in which there was no distinction between white and black, black and white, poor and rich and high and low.

(2) Biography - Ram Manohar Lohia was born on March 23, 1910 in a village in Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The financial condition of the family was not very good. In addition, when he was about two years old, his mother passed away. Thus his early life was full of difficulties. The feeling of compassion towards the sad, poor and helpless was a part of his nature from the very beginning. After B.A. he got a scholarship for higher education and went to England, but the experiences there distracted him and he went to Berlin from there. He received his PhD in Political Philosophy in 1932 from the University of Berlin. He wrote his dissertation 'Salt and Satyagraha' in German language only.


(3) Contribution to the freedom movement He actively participated in the 'Quit India Movement' of 1942. He kept running the movement by staying underground for about 15 months. Later the police arrested him and imprisoned him in the Lahore Fort. During the days he was underground, he founded a secret radio station, named 'Azad Hind Radio'. From there he did the work of public awareness by doing many broadcasts. In the prison, he was subjected to many inhuman tortures. The letters he wrote to the Governor General of Uttar Pradesh and the Governor General of India from jail are important documents of the Indian freedom struggle.

 

(4) Role in the socialist movement After the independence of the country, Dr. Lohia remained associated with the socialist movement throughout his life. They had certain principles, ideas and beliefs of their own. In 1954, he was appointed General Secretary of Praja Samajwadi Dal. At this time, Travancore-Cochin was ruled by the Praja Samajwadi Dal, with Pattam Thanu Pillai as its chief minister. When the agitators demanding a separate state on linguistic basis in Travancore-Cochin were fired upon, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia opposed the firing and demanded that the Pillai cabinet should resign. Due to sharp differences in this regard with other leaders of the party, he broke away from the party and in December 1955 he founded the Indian Socialist Party. He was made the chairman of this new party.

In 1962, he contested the election against Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and failed. In 1963, he was elected a member of the Lok Sabha in a by-election from Farrukhabad. As a Member of Parliament, he took the path of harsh criticism of the regime. His criticism was based on facts and figures. (5) Epilogue - Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia fought for the upliftment of all the downtrodden class throughout his life and in this sequence he went to jail many times in independent India also. Dr. Lohia gave the main inspiration to organize all the opposition parties of India to form an 'anti-Congress front' and the election results of 1967 were the result of his strategy. He was an outspoken person. He was an ardent supporter of Hindi. Throughout his life, he continued to oppose the wrong policies of the government.
